There are a few mystic people in my family, myself included. This particular experience unfolded over a number of years, though I only came to fully understand it much later.

In the 1990s, we moved to a seaside city when my daughter was nine years old.

We on a rise that overlooked the Juan de Fuca Strait. It was a beautiful place where ships of all kinds would pass—naval vessels, sailboats, tugboats, and more. But occasionally, "B" would see something unusual: a ship of a different kind.

B’s Ghost Ship and the Old Sea Captain

It began when she was about nine. From our vantage point near the ocean, she would sometimes see a wooden ship, distinctly several centuries old, sailing in the distance. The ship’s construction was unmistakably antique. She and her brother even used their little telescope to get a closer look at this mysterious vessel. It was like something out of a history book, a relic of a bygone era.

Over the years, B began to experience vivid dreams of a grisly old sea captain.

In these dreams, he would simply appear, gazing at her with an intense expression. She couldn’t understand why he was there or what he wanted, but he became a recurring presence in her life, showing up occasionally in her dreams. And while B had been born near the ocean, she felt an inexplicable aversion to it. She avoided swimming in it and had an unshakable fear of sea creatures. This puzzled me, as I had always loved the ocean, preferring it to any inland lake.

A Connection Revealed

Years passed, and B grew up. She became a mother herself, with a baby and a toddler. I was living with her during this time when she called me one morning to share an unusual dream she’d had the night before. In this dream, the same old sea captain appeared, but for the first time, he spoke to her.

... He had come back to apologize.

Through the "dream" state, she understood something extraordinary: she had been an infant on his ship in a past life. He "explained" telepathically that he had been responsible for her care but felt he had failed her. Something tragic had happened—the ship had gone down, and both he and the infant (B in her past life) were lost at sea.

In the dream state, she was surprised but suddenly understood his presence, and reassured the old sea captain that she was okay...

This seemed to bring him peace. And after that "dream", even 9 years later, he has never returned. It was as though his spirit had finally found the closure it needed.

Reflections on the Mystical

This experience left a deep impression on both of us. It reminded me of how interconnected we are across time, space, and dimensions in ways we can scarcely comprehend. We encounter people in our dreams or in fleeting moments—people we feel we’ve known forever, even if we can’t place where or how.

B’s recurring dreams of the sea captain revealed a bond that spanned lifetimes. It took her until her 30's to understand who he was and why he kept returning. His final visit brought closure not only to him but to her as well. Knowing that he had moved on, free of regret, brought them both comfort.

I often think about encounters like these, especially in my particular field of work... Whether in dreams or waking life, they remind us of the profound connections we share with others, energetic connections that transcend the boundaries of time and place. In the end, I believe these bonds are a testament to the mysterious and enduring nature of the human spirit.
